Critics Consensus

Alien³ takes admirable risks with franchise mythology, but far too few pay off in a thinly scripted sequel whose stylish visuals aren't enough to enliven a lack of genuine thrills.

As with Aliens, Alien 3 lacks the claustrophobic intensity of Ridley Scott's vision. Go to Full Review

One assumes that Weaver received enough combat pay to compensate for playing the now understandably cynical Ripley in this bleak and pointlessly grueling movie. Go to Full Review

It does succeed in rounding the three movies off, not smashingly but interestingly. It drives us into the wall, throws Ripley into a blind alley from which, at last, there is no escape hatch. Go to Full Review

Alien 3 immediately and completely squanders everything that made its predecessors great. This bold new vision swaps in a drab setting, unlikable characters, and an uninteresting plot that lacks suspense. Go to Full Review

[Alien 3] just doesn’t have the same tension and visceral impact that the first two movies did so well. Go to Full Review

The movie folds back upon its previous incarnations again and again, never attempting to advance its twice-told tale, content merely to retell once more. What's on screen seems aimed more at making money than making myth. Go to Full Review

Karl T @Fox_bat 21h Please understand it’s not just 1-star compared to the previous films. It’s just rubbish. The film itself almost sums it up when they say something like "who’s going to care about a bunch of convicts who have found god’. Who indeed. The characters are generally not people you root for or developed enough for you to care. Nothing really happens for 80% of the film. The best bit is when it finally ends. Aliens set up 4 great characters and this film kills off 3 of them in the opening credits. It’s feels low budget, acting is ok, it’s the fact it’s just not engaging. You don’t care when the characters are picked off and generally it leaves you just wondering what could have been. My son wanted to watch it after loving Aliens and I warned him not to watch this as it’s 2 hours of life he wouldn’t get back. He ignored me and watched the directors cut of Alien 3. So the only good thing about this film was my son confirming I was totally right and that he should listen to me more. See more B P @Bradster69 2d Not Bad, but Not My Favorite See more Vixo S @vixo_six Aug 11 Alien 3 disappointed me because it feels determined to erase much of the emotional progress Aliens had earned. Ripley still has depth thanks to Sigourney Weaver, but the supporting characters are so thin that very little around her carries emotional weight. I appreciate the film’s nihilism, religious imagery and willingness to kill characters who seem important, but darkness means less when I barely care about the people inside it. The creature compositing has also aged poorly, and much of the suspense feels like a weaker repetition of what the first two films did better. The ending finally gives the story some purpose, but by then I had spent most of the movie wondering why this chapter needed to exist at all. See more Tina C @RT00251507 Aug 6 WHY?? The only Alien movie worse than this is Alien Ressurrection. See more Uld F @RT10700606 Jul 26 A great classic—one of the greatest sci-fi horror productions. It is one of my favorites; it ranks second only to the original 1979 installment. See more diogo13 T @Tua_mera Jul 11 Definitivamente o pior que já vi desse tipo, muito previsível do começo ao fim.
