What to Know

Critics Consensus

All Day and a Night addresses worthy issues with thoughtfulness and care, although its effectiveness is undermined by a disappointingly familiar story.

The derivative way All Day and a Night handles the school-to-prison pipeline and crack epidemic does nothing to add nuance or newness to our understanding of these realities. Go to Full Review

A nervy, deeply felt drama that gets a little lost on its winding path to redemption but still finds a way home. Go to Full Review

"All Day and a Night" lingers and sometimes meanders in that gray zone, where the story can accrue texture and feeling and emerge as more than the sum of its plot mechanics. Go to Full Review

The story is a little too monotonous and it really does go in circles. Sometimes, it feels as if you started listening to the same track over, and over, and over again. Go to Full Review

The opening scene is powerful and starts things off with a jolt..... But the connecting narrative tissue just isn’t that strong and it leaves the movie feeling like a lesser version of others that came before it. Go to Full Review

While you can feel Cole's passion for the story bleed from the script to the screen, this tale of a young black man who does not want to repeat the mistakes of his father - only to end up in the same prison with him - comes up a little short. Go to Full Review

Philip D @Philipmdavis1 Aug 26 Individual acting was really good, especially Jeffrey Wright. See more Claudio C @Claudio666 Aug 19 All Day and a Night (2020) Long, Pointless and Boring (12,632 – 18 Aug 2026 – Claudio Carvalho) In Oakland, California, the aspiring rapper Jahkor Abraham Lincoln (Ashton Sanders) is a quite young man, who will have a child with his promiscuous girlfriend. One night, he breaks into the home of a man named Malcolm and kills his girlfriend and him. He is arrested and sentenced to life without parole but does not disclose the reason for the murder. Inside the prison, he meets his estranged father James Daniel "JD" Lincoln (Jeffrey Wright) and he recalls his childhood and his adulthood in the poor streets of Oakland. "All Day and a Night" (2020) is a long, pointless and boring movie by Joe Robert Cole. The intentions are good, but the screenplay with many flashbacks of the childhood and the adulthood of the protagonist is annoying and tiresome. My vote is four. See more Dawn T @RT08177813 Apr 13 Considering the group of producers that created this monstrosity, it makes sense why it lacks both nuiance and purpose. The movie is stereotypical and generates a narritive with no nuisance to the reasoning behind it.
