Nobody likes real-estate agent Oren Little (Michael Douglas), and he prefers it that way. He's deliberately mean to anyone who crosses his path and wants nothing more than to sell one final house and retire. Oren's life turns upside-down when his estranged son drops off a granddaughter (Sterling Jerins) he didn't know existed. Oren has no idea how to take care of a child, so he pawns the girl off on his neighbor, Leah (Diane Keaton) -- but he learns how to open his heart eventually.

Critics Consensus

And So It Goes aims for comedy, but with two talented stars stuck in a half-hearted effort from a once-mighty filmmaker, it ends in unintentional tragedy.

Douglas and Keaton do just as well with the romantic angle, mostly because he's so adept at dispelling any whiff of mawkishness. Oren's essential orneriness remains, no matter what, and the film turns out to be a lot of fun because of him. Go to Full Review David Stratton At the Movies (Australia) Aug 8, 2014

Whatever happened to Rob Reiner?... [He] seems utterly disengaged as he ploddingly assembles a film whose potential is never realised. Go to Full Review Joe McGovern Entertainment Weekly Jul 25, 2014

From the perspective of technical craft, nothing really seems out of place. None of it seems to help the frustratingly uninspired narrative, however, turning “And So It Goes” into a largely inoffensive but depressingly fruitless viewing experience. About as interesting as a Blue Plate Special when it could be, considering the talent involved, as richly textured as a fine, aged wine. Go to Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com Sep 2, 2020

Belle P @Belle.P Jul 9, 2026 Cute but predictable. Main character was perfect though. See more Elisabeth D @Gammy7 Jul 1, 2026 I thought this was a very touching film about loss, love, and growing older. See more Ted B. @Movieaddicted May 26, 2026 2.5 stars; Cute, heartwarming, and all of those other 'Hallmark' endearing qualities. The comedy aspect of the plot would be funny if it wasn't so predictable. The best thing about this movie was that Douglas/Keaton didn't try to be a Tracy/Hepburn. See more Andrea J @RT61308607 May 23, 2026 The world is full of drama, bad news, violence, etc. To watch this movie is a breath of sweetness, a simple smile, and hope that life doesn't end when you reach your older days. See more labeskimo T @RT44915827 May 17, 2026 This movie is so WEIRD... There's a scene with the grandfather saying how the 10yo girl would make a good wife someday..... There's another scene where a teddy bear is humped by a dog, then the next scene the little girl is hugging it in the backseat of grandpa car... Grandma touched it too, very weird & creepy movie!! Not even finished with it. Agree with the other review about such a hard watch in 2026... If I could rate it negative stars, I would... The only redeeming quality of the movie is Diane Keaton! See more Alison L. @RT06291657 May 17, 2026 Uncomfortable to watch in 2026. See more Read all reviews
