Joaquin U @Joaquin1 5d Entertaining. It’s based on a real story, which basically means an anecdote, a few historic incidents, and real people stretched with plenty of creative license. Still, it’s an engaging watch with a solid cast and good direction. Not a great movie, but a really nice one. Stroud’s relationships with the prison head, his mother, business partner, prison guard, and fellow inmates are all significant and well-developed. The supporting cast, including Karl Malden, Thelma Ritter, Betty Field, Neville Brand, and Telly Savalas, delivers exceptional performances. The film is handsomely produced, with excellent cinematography and direction. While there are some violence and rough language, it is not explicit. In summary, the film is wonderful as it depicts a life-affirming transformation in a man caught in the depths of despair. The audience feels as though they have walked in Stroud’s shoes, making the film transcend Lancaster’s star status. Birdman of Alcatraz is a top-notch, inspirational film with strong values and humanity. See more 05/12/2022 Birdman of Alcatraz sets up a fantastic story about an inmate who falls in love with the studies of birds. From the view of a murderer, this tale is an inspiring journey of kindness and forgiveness. This movie is great for anyone looking for a good drama to watch in their free time. Robert Stroud portrays an inmate exceptionally well and really draws out all the right emotions at all the right times. The filming has amazing cinematography, and mixed with the music leads to a gut-wrenching story that will leave you questioning many aspects of life. See more 07/24/2021 Wonderfully entertaining. But despite the raves for Lancaster, he is one of the main problems with it. Why does Lancaster always get himself in these movies playing withdrawn men, when the last thing he’s going to do is be withdrawn? He always pops into Lancasterisms. When he does his speech with the line ‘that don’t mean Billy be Damned’, I just role my eyes and say ‘well, there’s the same thing again’.
