The bones are there for a legendary movie but it quickly turns into a snoozer. I’m not going to say too much time and energy was put into world building at the expense of the story, but it’s hard to imagine equal time going into these two aspects of the movie, and quite frankly, I’m left thinking I’d have enjoyed this a lot more if twice as much time went into creating an interesting narrative while half as much time went into set design. As it stands, the movie is certainly memorable for its aesthetic, which has certainly left its mark on the genre. Maybe it’s hard for me to appreciate this aspect fully since I’ve seen so many works inspired by this grimy, futuristic world that also managed to tell a compelling story.
