Chris S @Janomi Aug 10 Chappie has plenty to like because the robot himself gives the movie its emotional hook. His innocence, fear, curiosity, and childlike development make him oddly lovable, even when the story around him becomes messy. Sharlto Copley gives Chappie a real personality through the motion-capture work and voice performance. The physicality makes him feel vulnerable and alive, which is essential because the movie depends on caring about him. Dev Patel also brings sincerity as Deon, the creator whose ambition opens the door to questions about consciousness, memory, identity, and what makes someone alive. Neill Blomkamp’s Johannesburg setting gives the film a gritty sci-fi world of crime, robotics, poverty, and militarized technology. The ideas are interesting, but the execution is uneven, and some characters are more irritating than compelling. Still, Chappie has enough heart and imagination to make it memorable. It's ideas, much like the plot are all over the place, with exaggerated and stupid caricatures that are called "characters". Plot holes that will make you WISH the protagonist was shot when anything happened. If i laughed once, it was too much, the egregious need to keep the drama up at all times doesn't make the movie immersive, it makes it unbearable to watch. Don't waste your time. It has elements of multiple genres, and the plot is all over the place. I admire how all the elements of the film come together in the end, creating a uniquely entertaining story. I'm mainly writing this review to s**t on the critics who rated it so poorly. The popcorn-o-meter is a better reflection of what to expect. See more Colby G @RT22705501 Jun 2 Chappie is a good movie that touches on some broad themes, the innocence of children, the duality of man and what is consciousness really? These are great themes and questions but they don't get explored enough or thoroughly enough. The movie has a fast pace so some of the plot holes get brushed over but they are still if you think about the movie later or read other reviews. I still like the movie and found it enjoyable. I think it would have been stronger if the broad elements were winnowed down a bit and the remaining themes focused more on. But not every movie has to have a deeper meaning or leave you with a new outlook on life. Some movies are just fun for the ride.
