That said the quietly devastating nature of the movie seems harsh enough, with the characters forever doomed to be frozen in time and unable to come to terms with their new reality. Even when acting in crappy movies (see, e.g. Chinese Box) she still manages to shine. However, there's little chance that Coming Home would be crappy with Zhang Yimou at the helm. This is a beautiful film, both poignant and heartwarming. And Li's costar Chen Daoming is superb as well.
