Sadly, the omnipresent score and soundtrack don’t allow for any sort of intimate connection to Tess, leaving us feeling like we’re watching a 1980s After School Special interpretation of what grief recovery should look like. Worse are the constant jump cuts and oddly placed handheld camera movement; considering the résumé of cinematographer Joel Schwartz, it’s clear he was out of his depth. There were some weird choices made in ADR as well, lending a cartoonish quality to the more emotional scenes and pulling focus in others. That said, the cast were all excellent in their roles. Justin Bartha in particular was an outstanding supporting character as David, and Vivien Lyra Blair shines as little Emily, punching far above class. Gren Wells needed to assert a little bit more creative control in the editing room and the music department, but pulled together workable performances that told a relatable story.
