A group of U.S. Navy engineers, led by Capt. Laidlaw (Taurean Blacque), are building an underwater base when they inadvertently disturb the lair of a gigantic creature. The monster attacks, and the crew, including lovers Collins (Nancy Everhard) and McBride (Greg Evigan), tries to evacuate, but the facility is badly damaged. After the exterior is breached, the increasingly desperate people become separated from one another, and the creature begins to pick them off one by one.

There are, in short, no human relationships aboard "Deep Star Six": just frequent frantic cries of "Mayday!" and special effects that bubble and gurgle a lot but never produce a single quiver of genuine terror.

For a 1989 sci-fi horror done on the sea floor with decent effects, I need to say it is definitely a cult classic. Decent actors with decent acting. The story builds up tension between the characters then adds a cool, creepy undersea creature. It's better than Leviathan in my opinion.

Always had a soft spot for this Abyss/Alien 80's-tastic romp. Whilst it's not in the same league as either of those classics, the acting was decent and the special effects for the time (slightly ropy creature effects not withstanding) were good. Despite the monster taking its time to arrive in the film and being a bit underwhelming when it did, I liked its b-movie vibe. Not many agree with me obviously but whilst it's no classic of the sci-fi horror genre, I still enjoyed this.

This was during the mini boom of deep sea movies spawned by "The Abyss". But sadly it got bad reviews and got a bad rap by people who don't understand it's not an "Alien" rip off. The monster is unique, a crazy combination of different sea creatures. The gore works. There are some character issues like the before mention moron who started the missile's self destruct. There are two fake out scares that got annoying. But overall, I found it fun, scary creature feature fun. A true underrated underwater classic of the 1980s that needs more love.
