South Boston cop Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) goes undercover to infiltrate the organization of gangland chief Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). As Billy gains the mobster's trust, a career criminal named Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) infiltrates the police department and reports on its activities to his syndicate bosses. The Departed creates an instantly familiar Scorsese atmosphere from the very start and doesn't relent until the very end. Full of twists, turns, humour, gripping and shocking moments the engaging script is tremendously supported by all of the outstanding cast involved. No actor steals the spotlight, its simply a 10/10 across the board from them all, but a particularly noticeable performance is one from Matt Damon and his brilliant ability to make you hate him as the villain. Nicholson thrives as an almost comic book style mob boss whilst DiCaprio embraces his role as the underdog that you remain rooting for. This really is Scorsese at his best and must be seen to be believed in all it's glory - Don't blink as you may miss one twist to the next. Fine cinema work.
