Chris S @Janomi Aug 10 Die Hard 2 is very entertaining because Bruce Willis still works so well as John McClane. He keeps McClane sarcastic, frustrated, stubborn, and believable, still feeling like a regular guy trapped in an impossible action scenario. The snowy airport setting gives the sequel a strong contained location. Planes circling overhead, failing systems, trapped passengers, holiday travel chaos, and the Christmas atmosphere create a solid ticking clock while keeping the movie connected to the original without just repeating Nakatomi Plaza. The action is bigger, with plenty of shootouts, chases, explosions, and plane-related set pieces. William Sadler is functional as Colonel Stuart, but he does not have Hans Gruber’s charisma or wit. The airport takeover also requires plenty of suspension of disbelief, but Die Hard 2 is still fast, fun, and effective. Its biggest offense is how closely it tries to replicate its style without having any of its flair, which has thus been replaced with overblown ideas that lean towards the ridiculous instead of the cool. The makers are clearly going through the motions, as evidenced by the uninspired, hackneyed script and the unconvincing action. Even Bruce Willis seems bored, and that's not a good sign, his unexcited demeanour sadly contagious. Moving the chaos from a skyscraper to an airport works surprisingly well, giving the film a different kind of tension and scale without losing the core appeal of John McClane being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The action scenes are well-staged and consistently entertaining, with a steady buildup of suspense as the situation escalates. Bruce Willis once again carries the film with his everyman attitude, balancing sarcasm and determination in a way that makes the character easy to root for. It doesn’t quite reach the tight, iconic brilliance of the first film, and some moments feel a bit more formulaic.
