The plane carrying wealthy Charles Morse (Anthony Hopkins) crashes down in the Alaskan wilderness. Together with the two other passengers, photographer Robert Green (Alec Baldwin) and assistant Stephen (Harold Perrineau), Charles devises a plan to help them reach civilization. However, his biggest obstacle might not be the elements, or even the Kodiak bear stalking them -- it could be Robert, whom Charles has reason to believe is having an affair with his wife and would not mind seeing him dead.

Critics Consensus

The Edge is an entertaining hybrid of brainy Mamet dialogue with brawny outdoors action -- albeit one that sadly lacks as much bite as its furry antagonist.

The Edge, for all its hokiness, makes it real. When Hopkins comes down from the mountain, I believed he was looking at the world with new eyes. Go to Full Review Jason Bailey Vice Oct 7, 2017
It's not hard to read Charles' journey in 'The Edge' as analogous to its author's: the library-dwelling intellectual using his wits to brave rougher elements. Go to Full Review Kenneth Turan Los Angeles Times Feb 14, 2001

...The Edge's fusion of Mametspeak with a true life adventure remains brawny entertainment, even it it is difficult to take as seriously as the filmmakers intend. Go to Full Review Dan DiNicola The Daily Gazette (Schenectady, NY) Jan 10, 2023

Mamet has always been concerned with primal masculinity...The test of these men is twofold: can they survive the wilderness, and can they survive each other? [Blu-ray] Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Luff V @Aubambambam 2 days ago Drags forever. Chatty chatty no bang bang. Properly grotesque as survival takes a stroll away from plausibility. Mamet's screenplay feels contrived and never delivers the edge it promised. Tamahori takes the audience for dunces and delivers his fair slice of cheese. The only female character is a slutty fashion model billionaire trophy wife who poses in a walmart squaw outfit in front of a log cabin before the billionaire's airplane crashes in the wilderness as they predictably do in Alaska survival movies. I sincerely hoped the mother Kodiak bear ate them both for breakfast. See more Gabriela G @fcb1899 Aug 11, 2026 It’s a must watch entertainment. See more James A @ablett001 Jul 17, 2026 The Edge carries a unique feel with it's tense moments, beautiful settings, great score and solid acting from Hopkins and Baldwin. The chase scenes in an unforgiving man vs nature setting create genuine thrills and whilst Baldwin's character does become borderline annoying at times, Hopkins' excellent delivery keeps it all on an even keel. All in all a great watch that relies simply on the tensions raised between Mother Nature and underlying character conflicts. See more Jimmy A @JimmyAblett Jun 13, 2026 Hopkins and Baldwin’s onscreen relationship carry this hard hitting survival movie. The wilderness and tension with the pursuing bear and Hopkins’ interesting and likeable character ensure that it keeps you captivated from start to end. Nice score and has help up well since its release.
