Jacob W @RT17896586 3 hrs ago Up until this point I never thought much about DR acting as I thought it was just Wizards. So when I saw this serious film about real events I was not sure as for me up until then I thought his acting was one dimensional. How wrong I was This is a powerful and moving film depicting real people during the apartheid period. His performance was really good I was surprised. What was more interesting was that he nor the film got the attention it rightly deserved. This is great film making and even if you don’t like DR like me I beg you to take a look at the movie. Thought provoking and historical storytelling done well. I like the details of how he made the key to match without getting caught that’s enough intensity right there… See more Chris L @Christoph2000 Jun 25, 2026 This might not be a rumination on apartheid South Africa more widely, though that would've given it a boost; as a reminder of how Ian Jenkin masterminded one of the most improbable prison escapes ever seen, it possesses enough knife-edge tension to work. It really is Jenkin's story though, to the extent that his two co-escapees might as well not exist at times. This is especially true of the French(?) third chap who, for reasons I really can't be sure of, was fictionalised and given an invented name (he was actually Alex Moumbaris). Why not fully honour the courage of all three? And those accents...look, I appreciate what a challenge attempting an accurate SA accent presents, but when Ian Hart as Denis Goldberg is the best of the lot you know you're in a heap of trouble. Then there's that totally redundant shot from right after the night guard defecated in the loo. For all its many glaring flaws, however, Escape from Pretoria is a worthwhile tribute to a soul who never let fascism win. The accents were appalling, completely off-putting and grating. This is a South African story voiced by foreigners, and hardly even skimming the surface of what it was all about. Ok purely as a generic prison break, but if you want to understand more of the context it’s set in, there’s got to be far more authenticity. See more Read all reviews
