Critics Consensus

Evita sometimes strains to convince on a narrative level, but the soundtrack helps this fact-based musical achieve a measure of the epic grandeur to which it aspires.

It's just a sluggish, contradictory mess, a drably "realistic" Latin-revolution music video driven by a soundtrack of mediocre '70s rock. Go to Full Review Mike Clark USA Today Jan 1, 2000

With one of the most dazzling screen chassis in years, Evita is definitely worth a look -- maybe even two. But don't look under the hood. Go to Full Review Patrick Horrigan Gay Community News (Boston) Jul 13, 2022
In the end, Madonna’s performance helps save Evita from being the irrelevancy it might have been and transforms it, instead, into something very much alive and strangely moving. Go to Full Review Sarah Kerr The New York Review of Books Aug 16, 2018
After all the painstaking verisimilitude the movie neglects its characters. Evita the woman shrinks. It's the background we react to-especially the crowd, with its power to applaud or boo. Go to Full Review Tim Brayton Antagony & Ecstasy Apr 27, 2015

No matter how great all the constituent elements were, [it couldn't] survive the kind of stiff, wholly artificial and forced performance that Madonna gives. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Manuel P @RT29331666 Aug 25, 2026 This film summarizes every ignorant british and american snob's image of Argentina to the T. And it was done 30 years ago, pioneers of the smug first-worlder's view of the rest of the world. And the musical was composed even before. See more Gurn B @RT67119943 Jul 7, 2026 Putting random notes around every word is so painful. Most of the lyrics are stupidly written. I hope the people of Argentina hate her because this movie made her out to be a total wh*re and self serving social climber. And her “generosity” was all from stealing and strong arming. Perhaps Bialystock produced this movie and the musical to bilk investors. See more Eye C @ECinc Jun 16, 2026 This is not a good movie, and an awful musical... this shouldn't exist. See more thiago S @Thiagostone Mar 13, 2026 Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são fracas, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom See more Evelyn X @yiyi1111 Jan 8, 2026 About halfway through the film, I realized I had confused Evita with Elisabeth—perhaps because of the narrator's role. It tells the story of a woman who always knew what she wanted. She seized every opportunity she had, rising from an illegitimate daughter to the wife of the President. It is a journey from the country to the city; from a social butterfly to a glamorous actress who captures fame with her power, beauty, and charm. I am not familiar with the actual history, but the film portrays her as someone who genuinely benefited the poor and earned their respect. The highlight, of course, is the most famous song: 'Don't Cry for Me, Argentina'. And she do look very good in the clothes.
