It successfully blends found footage, dramatization, and interview sequences into a cohesive story that delivers its fear in a unique way. The film deserves praise for standing largely on its own in composition. Few pseudodocumentaries layer multiple levels of “authentic” evidence so effectively, and The Fourth Kind does so in a way that feels surprisingly natural. The horror could have been dialed up, but where it does strike, it feels purposeful and more concerned with advancing the story than simply frightening the audience. The acting is believable and restrained, helping deliver a distinctive and successful viewing experience.
