Willy Beachum (Ryan Gosling), a hotshot prosecutor, is about to leave his post for a lucrative job at a private law firm when his boss (David Strathairn) hands him a seemingly open-and-shut case. Ted Crawford (Anthony Hopkins) tried to kill his wife with a shot to the head and is defending himself in court. All hope for a quick and easy trial flies out the door when Ted proves to be a more cunning and devious adversary than Willy anticipates.

Though Fracture's plot is somewhat implausible, the onscreen face-off between Gosling and Hopkins overshadows any faults.

It's straightforward and nongimmicky (you don't have to wonder whodunit because we're told in the first few minutes), involves a minimum of blood and gore, and holds our interest nicely.

Not since Lecter has a role been this well suited to Hopkins, whose intelligence and pristine formality as an actor often make him seem alien.

A smart and snappy thriller that makes light work of its ethical dilemmas, Fracture is a little too neat and tidy to stick in the mind for long, but the Hopkins-Gosling pairing is choice, and neither comes up short.

… not trying to be more than a crowd-pleasing entertainment... while not exactly feel-good, the way the Fracture's mystery resolves is a real cut above most Hollywood hokum...it feels like the way the plot unravels is the real point of this thriller…

A solid court drama where the evil genius loses at the very last moment. Any body understands what was the symbolism of the metal contraptions Hopkins’s character played with?

I thought Fracture was a really solid thriller. Anthony Hopkins is excellent as the calculating and manipulative antagonist, bringing a calm intensity that makes every scene more engaging. Ryan Gosling also does a great job, and the dynamic between the two really drives the film. What I liked most was the psychological aspect of the story. It’s less about action and more about mind games, which keeps you interested as the case slowly unfolds. The pacing can be a bit uneven at times, but the strong performances help carry it through. Overall, I’d give it a 7/10—it’s an engaging and well-acted thriller that’s worth watching.

Guns have serial numbers. The gun that Nunnely walked out of the house with is not his. What, nobody checked? That's dumb. And you can check if Anthony Hopkins bought a firearm, its standard procedure. What, nobody checked the serial of his gun? It's so painfully dumb. Guns aren't random things floating around. And on top of that, there is no legal precedent of proving whether a gun has been fired, or not, its nonsense. That's really dumb. As much as I like Rosamund Pike, its just hard to watch with all this dumbness.
