Kim M Apr 13 Great acting, no doubt. Just the story isn’t quite my cupa tea and I was all confused and dazed by the female leading role - meryl streep was playing and if that was the intention of the director, then he certainly succeeded. Both leading characters’ emotions were beautifully and delicately expressed and orchestrated by such amazing actors. I don’t like the story like this (kinda mixture of the Great Gatsby and Madam Butterfly I think) but if you wanna watch and learn some great acting, I highly recommend this movie. Otherwise not much. Based on the book by John Fowles and directed by Karel Reisz In a meta way this looks like a period piece but we also see that it's a movie-within-a-movie Jeremy Irons plays Charles and Meryl Streep plays Sarah Both are on the Southern coast of England filming a movie during the Victorian Era Charles' character is married but having an affair while Sarah is single and becomes the towns gossip once she and Charles meet Sarah was mistreated when her husband left to go fight off to war by other men therefore leading to her ostracization deeming her a harlot Off-screen Irons is Mike who's real romance is with his co-star, Streep as Ana who also engage in infidelity Yet as their romance blossoms it's hard to tell what's authentic The movie has two incredible leads, some nice intercutting of the two romances, and fantastic scenery with its attention to historical detail It's just too long and the on-screen romance is way more interesting than the off-screen one The endings are massively different too which is a big juxtaposition in itself But there is visual beauty to be had and comparing and contrasting love both on-camera and off Both Irons and Streep act immensely with the film managing to criticize outmoded patriarchal standards See more Fong Kok Hoong F 07/04/2021 Sweepingly scored, handsomely lensed and exquisitely acted, this adaptation of John Fowles' unfilmable novel of multiple endings and about a forbidden romance of a gentleman and the titular disgraced protagonist lends another perspective on contemporary desires fidelity in the mise-en-scène of a film within a film.
