Lee J @Wisew08 Aug 14 대니얼 데이 루이스의 연기는 가히 압도적이었고, 디카프리오 역시 훌륭하게 제 몫을 해냈다. 하지만 결말은 아쉬움을 넘어 난장판에 가까웠다. 19세기 뉴욕의 시대상에 눌려 개인의 복수극이 묻혀버린 느낌이었다. 역사 속 개인의 무력함을 보여주려는 감독의 의도였을지는 몰라도, 2시간 동안 쌓아 올린 복수극의 카타르시스를 허무하게 짓밟은 결말이었다. Daniel Day-Lewis was absolutely powerhouse, and Di Caprio held his own. But the climax was more than just a letdown—it was straight-up chaotic. The 19th-century New York backdrop completely drowned out the personal revenge story. Maybe Scorsese was trying to show how powerless individuals are in the face of history, but honestly, it just crushed the catharsis of a revenge tale I spent two hours building up to. His portrayal of Bill Cutting (Based on William Poole) is one of the most formidable and terrifying personalities ever put to the screen. Daniel is a magnetic force of nature and his towering presence just captivates you in every scene he is in. It's actually so intimidating that it feels like every other character is trapped in his presence and absolutely no one in the film escapes the man's wrath. Daniel’s character has class and etiquette but at the same time he is one of the most brutal and cruel individuals ever scripted. His calm and charismatic mannerisms paired with this brutal ambition to rule New York is for me one of the most inspiring performances in my lifetime, and it will always stick in my head as a masterclass example of acting. It's not a perfect film. I actually think it's best described as a flawed masterpiece, but It's a truly immersive experience of 1850’s New York. 8 / 10 See more Josh G @Parsifal83 Jul 31 An ambitious but uneven historical epic that falls short of Scorsese's best work. It's overlong, several scenes and stylistic choices haven't aged particularly well, and not every performance lands. Great story, great writing and great performances by Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day Lewis. But having a big buildup and then no actual battle at the end was very anticlimactic. There is no narrative except for one minimal thing, which on a scale of one to ten in how intriguing it is, is about a 1.5.
