Vincent Freeman has always fantasized about traveling into outer space, but is grounded by his status as a genetically inferior in-valid. He decides to fight his fate by purchasing the genes of Jerome Morrow, a laboratory-engineered valid. He assumes Jerome's DNA identity and joins the Gattaca space program, where he falls in love with Irene. An investigation into the death of a Gattaca officer complicates Vincent's plans.

A thoughtful hybrid of sci-fi, thriller, and character drama; to give you some idea of its high-mindedness, it not only opens with a relevant Bible verse (Ecclesiastes 7:13), but in the opening credits that follow, Gore Vidal is fifth-billed.

The system has transformed biological heritage into absolute private property. Gattaca shows us a society where nature has been domesticated until it has become a corporate design. Vincent is the triumph of existence over essence. The laboratory calls him 'invalid,' but he responds with his freedom even when the system believes it knows him through his code. The guy doesn't want to go to the stars; he wants to show those pinches laboratory gods that will has more balls than DNA. Life is a dirty accident, not a cooking recipe for rich people

'Gattaca' impresses visually and intellectually but keeps me emotionally distant. Its cold, restrained world and controlled production design create a barrier, even as Slawomir Idziak’s striking cinematography seduces with bold, almost aggressive colors. The film’s core—challenging the reduction of humans to data—is solid, and Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman provide calm, effective performances with subtle chemistry. The dialogue is sharp and eloquent, elevating the narrative. The first half drags slightly, but once the story simmers, it gains substance. 'Gattaca' is elegant, cultured, and entertaining, yet its icy atmosphere prevents it from becoming truly moving or unforgettable.

One of my top ten films. If you're looking for explosions and lasers, this is not the sci-fi film for you. But if you want what science fiction does best, pose moral and ethical questions in the future to investigate our present, then this is the film for you. Ethan Hawke's Victor is a fantastic depiction of the triumph of the human spirit over the logical extreme of genetic engineering. One of the few films I watch again and again.

It's is sci-fi but....nothing. Just a narration of a world that has adopted eugenics . No action, no world-building nothing. I do not recommend it.
