Dakota P @DaCinephile Aug 26 Brutally ahead of its time, Gattaca pulls the curtain back on a future that is very much already here. What was made as science fiction could now almost be considered commentary, and the strength of the filmmaking helps drive home that realization. The sets create a world that feels futuristic, but not by much, keeping the viewer grounded in the reality of what may come. They also make it harder to emotionally distance oneself from what is fast becoming a reality. A final tip-of-the-hat moment arrives in the closing minutes to balance what had seemed like such an unattainable goal. Vincent has more in common with those around him, and is less of an outcast, than even he realizes. Gattaca is well cast, and no role feels out of place. Aside from the sporadic request to suspend disbelief and simply accept a few details as “because the future,” the film maintains a driving suspense all the way through the credits. Amazing sets of the scenes and props and camera shots, special effects ahead of time. Most importantly the theme is very encouraging and meaningful, with a profound discussion regarding to the dilemma faced by marginalized individuals in a new societal structure where the advantages of genes and congenital gifts are ultimately enlarged while personal acquired skills and strengths are eliminated and ignored. See more Fernando M @RT76471198 Jul 7 I didn’t see this in theaters, but it’s the kind of movie that makes you realize you don’t need special effects, gunfights, car chases, or anything like that to create something truly different. And it is different. I absolutely love that the astronauts wear actual suits, business suits, Hugo Boss style, and the rockets look like they’re straight out of the 1950s. Where are they going? How do they get there? Does it matter? Not at all. The only weak point, if you can even call it that, is how easily the main character manages to get past the daily genetic screenings. Other than that, everything works. I’ve watched it countless times, and I wouldn’t hesitate to watch it again if there’s nothing better on. It’s one of those movies that quietly stays with you. It never tries to impress you with spectacle, yet it leaves a much stronger impression than many big budget productions. Sometimes less really is more.
