Alisha runs her own yoga studio while seeking investors to back her yoga phone app. Flashbacks reveal a wealthy and idyllic childhood with extended family. For reasons, she can't understand, her father dragged her and her mother away from that happiness into a life of isolation and need, which somehow led to her mother's suicide. All of that is the backdrop to an affair Alisha begins with her cousin Tia's fiancé, who is a go-getter real estate whiz kid who seems to have money to burn.

It’s a tingling triangle in which everyone is a casualty but not quite culpable and is made persuasive with the gravitas which a veteran like Naseeruddin Shah lends to the role.

Gehraiyaan is a compelling, beautifully acted character study of love and self-deception. While its depth doesn't always translate evenly on screen, Deepika Padukone's fearless performance makes it well worth the watch.

"Gehraiyaan" does attempt to be unique and stand out, but the finished result is a misfire. The movie starts off interestingly enough and does maintain a slick visual look and good performances throughout. Unfortunately, as the movie progresses, it just stays bleak and eventually becomes boring. Even when things start happening in the final act, I was not even close to being invested in any of the characters in the movie. The actors really do their best here but the story does them no favors. In the end, the movie is boring and a bit of a downer that ultimately feels kind of pointless and is one of the weaker Indian movies I have seen recently.
