Technically sleek but narratively weightless, it relies on visual wizardry to distract from a bare-bones story. The film opens with long, beautiful shots and an impressive sense of spatial immersion — then spends the next hour dragging out an extremely thin plot with endless close-ups of Sandra Bullock breathing. The setup is stronger than the payoff. Once the tension wears off, whats left is a hollow journey through increasingly implausible obstacles. It's not profound, it's not moving — it's just long. The transition in and out of Ryan Stone's helmet is the kind of directorial decision that reminds you what cinema is actually capable of, pulling the viewer into her breath and terror and then releasing her back into the void. Sandra Bullock conveys survival instinct, grief, and physical exhaustion without ever letting the craft show. Ninety minutes pass like doomscrolling. At first, I thought it was a single-shot film, but it still had very long single-shot sequences. Probably one of the most adrenaline-rushed films I have ever watched. The final shot is where the film earns everything it put its audience through. Ryan Stone crawled out of the water, fingers in the mud, pulling herself upright on unsteady legs and feeling gravity for the very first time as something earned rather than given. I get not everyone thinks this way, but there was no emotional or other connection to be made to the film, so the bad science really just emphasized the poor plot and storyline.
