Boxer Joe Pendleton (Robert Montgomery) is killed in a plane crash on the way to a championship fight. Unfortunately, Joe wasn't supposed to die and is brought up to heaven too soon by an overeager angel (Edward Everett Horton). The angel's boss, Mr. Jordan (Claude Rains), sends Joe back to earth in the body of a murdered playboy to straighten out his life and resume his boxing career. Along the way, he meets an idealistic young woman (Evelyn Keyes) and falls head over heels in love.

Precise storytelling that doesn't waste words or time. Relax and indulge in another film from Hollywood's prime. A first-rate fantasy that shows modern producers how it should be done.

A lot of the cinematography was great, but I didn't connect with the main character at all. I know he was meant to be a low educated boxer, but they could have at least given him street smarts. He came across as dumb as a rock... extremely slow to figure out what was going on. I also felt there was a lot of repitition explaining how the world worked, as if the audience didn't get it the first two times.

Like many people, I saw the Warren Beatty remake before this one. I loved that one, but the original is just as good! Great acting, great dialogue! Good score by Frederick Hollander. Highly recommended!

I'll give the supporting cast due credit for their professionalism but this particular fairy tale is otherwise weak. Plot holes aplenty; with the worst one being KO Murdoch being gunned down from close range in front of a crowd of thousands. We aren't shown that event, probably because even the writers and director knew it couldn't be made semi-believable.
