Driven by an extraordinarily creative premise—immortal warriors fighting through the centuries until only one remains—the film seamlessly blends 16th-century Scottish lore with gritty 1980s urban action. Christopher Lambert anchors the story with a grounded, mysterious presence, supported by Sean Connery’s charismatic mentorship and an absolute powerhouse, unhinged villain performance by Clancy Brown as The Kurgan. Backed by a legendary Queen soundtrack and dynamic, music-video-inspired cinematography, the swordplay and memorable climactic duel deliver genuine thrills. While a few dated effects and campy, childish humor beats hold it back slightly, it remains a wildly fun, unique, and deeply memorable fantasy experience. The cast is solid across the board, with Christopher Lambert giving an excellent lead performance as Connor McCloud, the titular highlander, while Sean Connery delivers his usual gravitas as Ramirez. However, it's Clancy Brown who steals the shows as the villainous Kurgan, magnetic even at his most menacing. Behind the camera, director Russell Mulcahy crafts a fun fantasy with a simple but brilliant premise. He takes full advantage of the immortal concept, showing different time lines and how characters change while also delivering some fantastic action. A true fantasy classic to this day.
