Kevin P @RT55971421 Jul 20 Amusing, but messy adaptation of the classic book/radio show. Alan Rickman is hilarious and adorable as Marvin the depressed robot. Martin Freeman is pretty likable as the main lead, even if his agency is often stripped away and the film often leans into the cringe/awkward humor of the era. I enjoyed the dry British humor crossed with absurd alien surrealism. The supporting cast is pretty good. The movie gets confused and directionless in the middle portion of the runtime. The main villain feels like an afterthought. I rolled my eyes when they got to the "Why didn't you tell me" cliche conflict. The movie is absurd, but a little boring and low stakes with a thin plot compared to the original books and radio show. The Sam Rockwell character is kind of annoying. The movie has a cool cinematic grande scale and scope of the universe. But there are too many humans and not enough aliens in outer space. Overall, it's a messy but passionate adaptation that's worth a watch despite the kinks. But it also felt like made the things I didn't like in the book a lot more clearer and became even more unlikeable here. Deschanel's character feels such a misfire in both the book and this movie. It's almost like Adams either don't know how to write relationships or just don't like a single character he wrote in this story. Either way that was bad and that's probably why I enjoyed the second book way way more but it doesn't seem like anyone's going to adapt it any time soon. Even while reading the book, I was like this feels like a 2000s scifi comedy rather than a book from almost 50 years ago. So the movie was good enough but it's not that great. Sure it's a maximalist bomb, but I have a good bit of fun with this movie every time I revisit it, largely because it embraces its own absurdity with such earnest, colorful energy. It may not answer the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything, but it certainly provides an entertaining ride through the stars.
