B P @Bradster69 1d Not Bad, but Not My Favorite See more Cinema S @cinema_sensei 5d The idea of rich tourists paying to murder victims is genuinely terrifying, and the bleak European setting builds great initial tension. But once the torture starts, it drops all mystery for pure, stomach-churning gore. The characters are paper-thin slasher clichés, making it hard to care. It certainly leaves an impression, but as a film, it relies far too heavily on cheap shock tactics. See more Dan C @djeec Aug 17 The second I knew what Eli Roth was all about was when I saw one particular scene from Hostel. It's easy to miss if you're not paying that close attention, but it's a big tell in how Eli doesn't really understand how motivation is supposed to work in a film: Two pretty girls seduce the American boys into staying at the hostel. When the boys are left to their, soon to be very gruesome deaths, the girls give each other a knowing look and a smile and just walk away. That's when the whole thing fell apart for me. These are two very attractive females, that give zero indication that they are evil, especially THAT evil. Knowing what they did to these guys and thinking it's funny doesn't make any sense in any universe. Their motivation is completely and utterly out of character. When you're writing is that sloppy, you shouldn't be making movies. But, I guess if you know QT, you get to make them anyway. See more Kiran C @Kiran1981 Aug 16 It’s a movie about an underground murder club, very graphic, lots of violence and nudity. It doesn’t pretend to be profound or insightful, and that’s ok, not every film has to be. If you want some cheap scares and gore I’d give it a watch. If you want a compelling story, likeable characters, or some kind of symbolism/deeper meaning, look elsewhere. Very well acted, good effects, though the premise does become quite ridiculous at times. Overall the story is interesting but not the best execution. See more Par H @Parhwy Jun 28 Hostel (2005) is a 94-minute-long US horror I saw on Netflix in June 2026. I avoided this film for years. Why? The cover: a person’s face with a drill in their mouth. Yep, hard no. I avoid horror as my brain is a troll: it picks up junk and peppers my dreams with nonsense. Example: I was enjoying Vikings, that TV series, until I started dreaming about dying, being in coffins, etc. And that’s not even horror. I can watch zombie and apocalypse films easily. What was this film like? The first 27 minutes lack horror; it’s building characters and story. Costuming is far too clean. We get horror at 40 minutes. While bad, it is sometimes off camera (see weapon, zoom to victim face, weapon noise, screaming, see aftermath). Not always. Editing, make-up, foley, mannequins are done well. The story evolves and there is a nice moral cross-over with the final fight scene. Thankfully, few jump-scares (they are the worst for my stability). Rewatch? No. Recommend? Sure, why not. 6/10.
