In 2035, highly intelligent robots fill public service positions throughout the world, operating under three rules to keep humans safe. Despite his dark history with robotics, Detective Del Spooner (Will Smith) investigates the alleged suicide of U.S. Robotics founder Alfred Lanning (James Cromwell) and believes that a human-like robot (Alan Tudyk) murdered him. With the help of a robot expert (Bridget Moynahan), Spooner discovers a conspiracy that may enslave the human race.

I, Robot is good because the robot-murder mystery gives the movie a strong sci-fi hook. A detective who distrusts robots investigating a death that may have been caused by one creates a clean engine while raising questions about programming, free will, safety, and artificial consciousness. Will Smith gives Del Spooner charisma, sarcasm, anger, and buried trauma. His distrust of robots could have been one-note, but Smith gives it personal weight. Sonny is the most interesting robot in the film because he is gentle, strange, unsettling, and sympathetic, making the larger questions about choice and consciousness feel more emotional. The futuristic world design is sleek and memorable, and the freeway attack is a strong action sequence. The movie uses its ideas more as blockbuster fuel than deep sci-fi, and the Converse product placement is distracting, but I, Robot is still entertaining and effective.
