Critics Consensus

Flattening the nuanced ideas of its acclaimed source material with a tonally broad approach, Klara and the Sun aims to be endearing and inspiring but winds up cloying and twee.

Audience Says

Elevated by Jenna Ortega’s luminous performance, Klara and the Sun may occasionally fly too close to its Celestial flame, but its poignant exploration of grief and striking imagery make for a memorable experience.

Yet the premise is far more existential than Waititi’s adaptation makes it.

If Waititi were willing to make Klara’s situation a bit more forlorn, or to press a bit harder when pointing out the futility of her efforts, the movie might have worked as a satire of Hollywood’s morale-priming clichés.

One can’t help but respond to Klara’s essential unjaded sweetness and to how her relationship with both Josie and Chrissy develops.

You can almost feel Waititi shrugging his shoulders and whistling off into the sunset. It’s hard to know how to feel about that.

Under the direction of Waititi, the movie strikes an unusual balance between twee, simple comedy and sophisticated drama that will not to be to the taste of all viewers.

Waititi's quirky take may lack the profundity of Ishiguro's previous adaptations, but the movie is far from terrible. Ortega's cheery, wide-eyed optimism as Klara is quite endearing.

I’ve seen all the negative reviews but I don’t have time for negativity. It was weird, wild, and interesting. It made me want to follow the story more for the meaning. Honestly still wondering what I watched but the acting was incredible and that is what I found interesting

Definitely a heart warming movie about friendship, family dynamic, the way people grieve the loss of loved ones, and finding who you are. There are some very funny parts and some sad parts. Cast was very good at hitting their roles.

It was entertaining but about robots. It was well done portraying human-like robots. The actors did a good job & it was interesting.
