Critics Consensus

Last Action Hero has most of the right ingredients for a big-budget action spoof, but its scattershot tone and uneven structure only add up to a confused, chaotic mess.

It’s nothing new that the makers of Last Action Hero don’t have a clear notion of what separates movies from life, but the makers of the other summer blockbusters aren’t any better versed in reality...

The director has to boost the realism of his staging in a rather self-defeating manner. It begins to look, not that he's having it both ways, trading on what he mocks, but that he has painted himself into a corner.

Far from being a failure, frankly, I find it to be an entertaining and criminally underrated film from McTiernan, which parodies the clichés of the action genre with an Arnold Schwarzenegger in full form. [Full review in Spanish]

Is it predictable at times? Yes. Is it a fun ride watching Arnold make fun of himself? Heck yes. Did the meta line he says to himself in the lobby feel a little too real? I thought so and it was strangely moving to me. This movie is better than I was anticipating, and it deserves a higher score than it has received here.

A true sendup of the entire action genre! John McTiernan’s family action comedy Last Action Hero (1993) is a proper satire on the action genre he helped create with Die Hard and Predator. McTiernan keeps the exploding cars and corny catch phrases coming for a never ending string of action tropes. It’s quite funny seeing a famous action director spoof his own movies. The amount of cameos in Last Action Hero alone is insane. Arnold Schwarzenegger is outstanding as the movie action hero Jack Slater as well as himself the actor. His sturdy charisma, quirky line delivery, and fun attitude make for a highly enjoyable lead role. McTiernan knows you’re just watching for Arnold. I appreciate that Schwarzenegger had a sense of humor over his action career and pictures as he’s basically playing a parody of himself the entire film. He genuinely kills it in Last Action Hero.

This was promoted as a big-budget action movie. It is a superb corny comedy. Lots of sophomoric jokes mixed with a delightful interaction between Schwarznegger and a young boy.

Hated this when it first came out but over the years I've watched it half a dozen times. It has spirit, which I can't say about the vast majority of movies and if you live films, you'll enjoy its fruits.

Last Action Hero, one of my favorite action movies ever made. The story, the straight up entertainment. The action sequences was over the top. If you love watching nostalgic 80s and 90s movies. Definitely watch this. I love Arnold Schwarzenegger and he does great and acts like the Terminator. The cameos in this movie were unexpected. Like T-1000 from Terminator 2: Judgement Day and Sharon Stone from Basic Instinct. Overall, I give Last Action Hero a 9.5/10 or a 4/5 stars.
