Critics Consensus

Clumsily directed and missing most of the TV series' campy charm, Lost in Space sadly lives down to its title.

A galactic slump of a movie that stuffs its travel bag with special effects but forgets to pack the charm.

After seeing Lost in Space, my first impulse was to say that it had been made by a bunch of sorcerers' apprentices who didn't know how to tell a story with their high-tech tools. But why give apprenticeship a bad name?

The new robot is a disappointment. Instead of the endearingly low-tech fireplug of yore that warned Will Robinson of encroaching danger, the new machine is all bells and whistles and no fun at all. Kinda like the movie itself.

There is admittedly much to fault in Lost in Space, from dialogue to somewhat dodgy CGI, but it will always be one of those blockbusters that millennials will remember, whether it's for nostalgic reasons or otherwise.

In the end, while a lot of the complaints are justified, perhaps the critics were a little overly-harsh overall. It's hard to say that it was entirely successful at trying to bring back the classic premise, but it still offers up a fair amount of fun.

The film easily plays on its title, because the acting, plot and many other aspects are truly “Lost in Space.”

I was a fan of the original Lost in Space TV show -- until it turned ridiculous. So I was looking forward to a serious movie. This was serious -- seriously bad. They turned the Robinsons into a dysfunctional family. William Hurt was boring. Matt LeBlanc was a cringeworthy the making. Heather Graham was useless. Mimi Rogers was not someone you would want to be around, as was the character of Penny. Will Robinson was good. Dr. Smith was good. The biggest problem was the script. As the movie went on it turned into an absurd time-twisting bundle of confusion.

Loved this as a kid. Rewatching it now as an adult I still find it really good. The sound design, score, the look of it, visual design, all of it beats the modern day flat look of pretty much everything being produced. LeBlanc and Oldman was great. I might say theres some nostalgia behind it, but still thinks it gets unreasonable bad amount of reviews.

IMHO this is an excellent movie. I do not understand the less than completely positive reviews this movie has received.

This would've killed Joey Tribbiani's acting career.
