Seven-year-old Ludovic (Georges Du Fresne) announces to his startled parents, Pierre (Jean-Philippe Écoffey) and Hanna (Michèle Laroque), that he is in fact a girl. His parents first view his newfound taste for girls' clothes and toys as a harmless phase, but as other neighborhood parents grow concerned -- particularly Albert (Daniel Hanssens), Pierre's prudish boss and the father of Jerome (Julien Rivière), the boy Ludovic has decided he wants to marry -- they take steps to "cure" him.

Like Ludovic, I marvel at the wonderful, magical mystery that is life. All these years later, Ma Vie en Rose remains a rapturous miracle. Go to Full Review Alyx Vesey Bitch Media Jan 7, 2021
Credit should go foremost to du Fresne, who is great as Ludovic. It's pretty astounding how capable he is at conveying Ludovic's feelings, particularly when she's swallowing others' transphobia. Go to Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times Jan 1, 2000

The movie is about two ways of seeing things: the child's and the adult's. It shows how children construct elaborate play worlds out of dreams and fantasies, and then plug their real worlds right into them. Go to Full Review Dan DiNicola The Daily Gazette (Schenectady, NY) Jan 19, 2023

Has the good sense not to preach or treat its characters with frivolity. It is in the truest sense of the word a family film. Go to Full Review Rob Gonsalves Rob's Movie Vault Sep 1, 2022

This is the sort of sweet, kind-hearted comedy Hollywood seems less and less capable of. Go to Full Review Jan Stuart The Advocate Apr 19, 2022
The film's redemptive ending leaves open the possibility of growth and healing in all links of the community chain. If you must relive the agony of a misfit childhood, Ma Vie en Rose is a compassionate way to go. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Thomas M @TMProofreader Nov 25, 2022 The best international movie ever made! See more May 30, 2021 I saw this film when it first came out and it blew my mind. At the time, these issues weren't really being explored with such humility. If there was something mainstream out there regarding gender identity, it was a gross exaggeration of what all that means. I'm not sure how this film might translate from France in the late 90's to now, but, if you are curious, you should definitely check this one out. See more Marco L @Marcoaelozano Nov 16, 2018 5/12/2019 This film is several years ahead in tackling a possibly very unusual topic back then: transsexuality. Ludo belonged to a family trying so hard to conform the the social norms while he was rather carefree about his condition, much to her parent's dismay. This would have been an excellent film if the ending wasn't so "convenient". See more Oct 25, 2018 Excellent film. It us as enchanting and heartfelt today as it was 20 years ago. Except back then it was brave as well. See more Mar 1, 2018 This is a very well acted, educational film. The film highlights the formation of gender identity in a very young boy who feels and thinks he is a girl. It is a powerful performance combining the actor's fantasies with his reality and the effects of his femininity on his family. This film must have been ground breaking 20 years ago. I am pleased to have seen it. See more Mar 9, 2014 A excepción del protagonista y su abuela, todos los personajes son insoportables. See more Read all reviews
