It is a story of a boy and a girl, but also a country. This tale of fiction derives almost entirely from stories of people during the Partition of India. The past is always present. And decades later, when all incidents of woe have been spoken of, what remains is the early feeling of love that was too personal to share.

Imtiaz Ali reminds us that history may remember borders, but those who lived through it remembered the people they lost. The film makes you yearn for a love like Keenu and Jiya’s, but never for the pain of waiting a lifetime to reunite.

Shah... acts the hell out of what might be his meatiest part in a feature film in the last decade. Especially how he enacts the dementia episodes, when Ishar recognises someone momentarily, and when the light leaves his eyes.

Masterpiece! Will always be remembered as Imtiaz Ali’s best. A refreshingly humane film in an age of jingoistic crap from Bollywood.

A beautifully made film that presents the best and worst of human behavior. Imtiaz’s best film ever with one of the best all time performances by Naseeruddin Shah.
