Critics Consensus

Mallrats colorfully expands the View Askewniverse, even if its snootchie has lost a few of the bootchies boasted by its beloved predecessor.

Mallrats mixes clever bits and an appealing quirkiness (which goes a long way) with gross-out practical jokes, needless repetition and obvious padding, since it has no real plot.

While Mallrats does play better now than when it was originally released, it still rests below a handful of more accomplished titles in Smith's View Askewniverse.

London and Lee expertly lead this cast of "misfit toys" in an appropriate follow up to Smith's debut, Clerks.

In spite of its failed release, this remains nicely watchable if not terribly important.

Mallrats is a fun and underrated comedy that works very well as a follow-up to the 1994 film Clerks. While it has a different style and bigger energy, it still keeps the sharp humor and laid-back attitude that made Kevin Smith’s earlier work memorable. The film shines because of its hilarious dialogue, strange conversations, and entertaining characters. The chemistry between the cast keeps the comedy flowing naturally, making even simple scenes enjoyable to watch. Its mall setting also gives the movie a unique atmosphere that captures a very specific time and culture. The humor is goofy, sarcastic, and sometimes ridiculous, but that charm is exactly why the film has gained such a loyal following over the years. Overall, Mallrats is a good comedy that delivers laughs, memorable characters, and plenty of personality. I would rate it an 8/10 for its humor, quotable writing, and strong rewatch value.
