Critics Consensus

It may not be groundbreaking, but Man of Tai Chi represents an agreeably old-fashioned picture for martial arts fans -- and a solid debut for first-time director Keanu Reeves.

The brutally efficient shooting style Reeves employs to film master choreographer Yuen Woo Ping's breathtaking fights is refreshingly grounded and old-school kinetic.

Reeves has clearly seen many Hong Kong films, and with the help of two veterans, Hollywood cinematographer Elliot Davis and HK editor Derek Hui, he's replicated one.

The concoction works, despite -- or maybe because of -- its unjaded, fantastical familiarity.

'Man of Tai Chi' does a great job at convincing us that we don't need fast cars, massive shoot outs, and large breasted vixens to make an exciting action movie, just two dudes willing to beat the living snot out of each other.

While the fights are well and good, it's the rest of Man of Tai Chi that's a muddled mess.

An entertaining genre movie that pays tribute to the past with a traditional story about honor and the discipline of martial arts.

Now the acting and fight choreography was a bit hammy, not to mention the scenes that could give people seizures. But overall a decent film

Keanu Reeves is a good director and a better villain. The fight scenes are great and the story is really interesting. Keanu resurrected his carrer with John Wickbut this get him there

Need some real stuff to be anywhere near legendary. Unbelievable shot angles didn't do it any credits either.

The story isn't anything special, but has some very entertaining fight scenes full of fast paced martial arts, although they tend to be understated rather than showy in their style. Reeves suits his role as the mysterious benefactor pulling the strings, but does look a bit out of place considering the rest of the cast. The film has a good length to it, but seemed to lack something overall.

Nice fights, cheesy plot. If it were the 90s it would be a good movie. It's entertaining and easy
