As Victor Frankenstein (Kenneth Branagh) is dying he shares a tale of gruesome terror with a sea captain. Victor, using previous experiments by a brilliant scientist, was able to bring a creature (Robert De Niro) assembled from body parts back to life. Once he realized how destructive his experiments had become, he abandoned the creature and tried to live a normal life with his fiancée (Helena Bonham Carter). The lonely creature seeks out Victor and demands one of two things: a bride or revenge.

Critics Consensus

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is ambitious and visually striking, but the overwrought tone and lack of scares make for a tonally inconsistent experience.

It’s too bad that the filmmakers couldn’t include women in their reverence with the sort of understanding that Mary Shelley showed toward men.

A film as misshapen and compelling as its central creature, Mary Shelleys Frankenstein is a beautiful monstrosity in 4K.

Branagh's version is too respectful and ultimately, well, lifeless.

As a gothic horror tale, Branagh strives to infuse it with dark atmospheres and a solemn tone that serve to showcase a made-up Robert De Niro, but his noisy narrative often ends up stumbling on its own excessive theatricality. [Full review in Spanish]

It's a little hamish. Very dramatic. But ultimately satisfying. This movie will hit you if you've experienced an existential crisis. Otherwise, you won't get it. Bob did a pretty good job on this one. Kenneth Branagh as Victor is reasonably convincing in his hubris. The cinematography is very whooshing and operatic—dizzying close-ups with shallow depth of field, to the point that the entire screen might be filled with two-thirds of an actor's face. The money shots occur when De Niro realizes who and what he is.

An underrated film that does far more justice to the Frankenstein story and its themes than the style-over-substance Netflix version.

Just watched this adaptation of Frankenstein all the way through for the first time and let me tell you, I enjoyed this version a lot more than the GDT reimagining. It was a lot more faithful to the novel and while it wasn't perfect I found it to be quite entertaining with solid performances all around. I will be getting the Arrrow 4k of this film at some point. I can imagine it looks and sounds even better than the Tubi HD scan that I watched.

Truly ham handed, so much wasted talent. The story does NOT need a "glow up" it needs reverence. Victors castle does appear to be the singly most flammable structure since the Library at Alexandria. Was the wallpaper and curtains made of gun cotton?
