Based on Malay Folklore and drawing inspiration from Creature From the Black Lagoon, this creature feature is set in World War II. A Japanese ship transporting prisoners of war to occupied territories for slave labor. After being torpedoed by allied submarines, a Japanese soldier and a British POW are stranded on a deserted island and soon discover that they're being hunted by a ferocious mythological creature, the Orang Ikan. Both the soldier and POW realize that they must work together to survive the unknown, despite their differences.

Despite some solid low-budget make-up work and decent central performances, “Monster Island” doesn’t have enough meat on its bones, somehow feeling narratively inert even at just 83 minutes.

Orang Ikan has a heavy dose of kicking and punching, which is on brand for director Mike Wiluan. Fans of hand-to-hand combat, war movies, and creature features are in for a pleasant surprise.

While there’s not a particularly deep message in Monster Island, it’s a solid entry in the “befriending the enemy” trope that often comes along with more intimate war stories that are set outside the bounds of the battlefield.

Monster Island is good. Well, at least good enough for the niche it inhabits.

Monster Island might get accused of being bare bones by other critics, but I prefer to see it as a “meat and potatoes”

A cross between Hell in the Pacific and Creature from the Black Lagoon should not be this boring.

Surprisingly good. A solid little monster flick/buddy movie, with the monster exactly as it should be. It was the human aspect that I wasn’t expecting

Dude, this is a solid monster movie. That’s it, plain and simple. It’s advertised as a movie with a murderous monster and BOOM, it’s a murderous monster movie. This quick hour and twenty-two minute movie gets right to the chase. Two captives in WWII get shipwreck in the pacific. One is Japanese and the other is English. Chained together and fighting at first, they discover they have to work together to survive, then BAM! monster shows up. It’s go the kills you hope for. The monster reminds me of The Creature From the Black Lagoon. Not a bad little flick.

Great movie! At first for no reason at all I thought it was an origin story for John C Riley's Character from Skull Island. The movie was perfect for what I was looking for on a late Thursday night! Lots of action, lots of fun, good story..

"Monster Island", a straightforward World War II creature feature & a tale of survival when enemies must take on a greater foe, a jacked up Creature from the Black Lagoon. Fun monster design & head ripping practical effects made it a good time.
