Critics Consensus

The Muppet Movie, the big-screen debut of Jim Henson's plush creations, is smart, lighthearted, and fun for all ages.

It's funny. It's as cute as Paul Godfrey's hair. It has some nice songs. And, to borrow the title from one of them, sometimes it keeps Movin' Right Along.

The story is quite cleverly devised to take [the Muppets] through a gamut of miniature Hollywood movies - especially westerns. There is a great deal of cute and charming slapstick, an occasional spot of satire, and some excellent music.

"The Muppet Movie" may be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, a real miracle. It's a G-rated film that neither talks down to children nor puts adults to sleep, and it offers humor, fantasy and warmth for everyone.

"The Muppet Movie" is wholesome, witty, well-done and even - in its own way - engaging. That's a pretty impressive list for a film that is, more than anything else, just plain fun.

Certainly it is the brightest star in the summer galaxy, combining non-sense and satire in a marvelously inventive pastiche that works on several levels and appeals to both young and old.

The humor of The Muppet Movie is fast, light and irreverent; it's one of the most entertaining and intelligent family-rated pictures in a long time.

Every time I see this, it reminds me of how special the time period was when Jim Henson was a part of the Muppets. There are distinct characters in this film and the parts they play come out strongly in the way they emphasize the movement of the Muppets. I really miss the Muppets from back then because it was a whole different mindset and intellect. And Kermit sound sounded like Kermit. Anyway, it’s an adorable movie and in my opinion the best Muppet movie they’ve ever made.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. It has all of the heart and whimsy of classic Hollywood, told through the lens of some of the most iconic and charming characters in pop culture history. The music by Paul Williams is enough to have you tapping your toes or welling up in tears. The humor is top-notch, and in a certain class only The Muppets themselves can achieve. Overall, if you haven't seen this movie, you are doing yourself the largest disservice imaginable. Fantastic movie, 10/10

The Muppets are a cornerstone of puppetry and children’s entertainment. The 1979 film will always be the most magical and all the muppet films for this reason: it’s for the dreamers. The doers. It teaches you to go after what you want and cherish the people you meet on your journey. Don’t forget the power of belief and make-believe. Lead with your imagination and you’ll do wonders. If a frog can do it so can you
