Critics Consensus

Stylish production and an all-star ensemble keep this Murder on the Orient Express from running off the rails, even if it never quite builds up to its classic predecessor's illustrious head of steam.

The actors here try too hard to flesh out roles that are little more than stock types. Go to Full Review

[Kenneth Branagh] doesn't bring much new to the basic conception-a bunch of famous actors play eccentrics cooped up on a train, with secrets to be unearthed. But he does embellish the template with glossy extras. Go to Full Review

There's something quaint and comforting about this film and its brand of old-fashioned storytelling, where coincidences are extremely likely, everyone somehow knows a countess, and a man puts honor above all else. Go to Full Review

susie 10/17/2024 Loved it! Great movie, it's entertaining! See more Lori C @lkcampbell 3d Amazing! Acting, cinematography, you name it! See more Ariel J @Arielunderthesea 3d I enjoyed the journey that this film took me on. It is one where multiple people could be the killer and I changed my mind several times on who was my suspect. True to form, the Hercule Poirot character had me thinking his questions and clues were meaningless until they weren't. That is one of the best things about these types of movies and this one didn't disappoint. It's a solid watch. See more John G @ACC65 4d Not recommended. Very strong cast, but let down by a set that seemed to be created by AI or poorly constructed in studio. It felt like a first run through of the script, dragged and was not engaging. This version was not a patch on the 1974 version. See more Chloe W @RT35793101 Aug 17 I am quite saddened by the reviews for this movie. To me it was filled with amazing actors, incredible emotional performances, and a very real and human Poirot. What people considered flat lines and a boring plot was truly quite funny without being cheesy. The plot is also meant to escalate and so it is fine to me if there are scenes with very little happening and only focusing on certain aspects to build suspense. I love Kenneth’s adaptations personally and think one should give it a try before letting readers or the original preferences to sway you from watching. See more Chris S @Janomi Aug 10 Murder on the Orient Express is good because Kenneth Branagh gives Poirot intelligence, ego, precision, and a strong sense of moral order. He makes the detective theatrical without turning him into a joke, and he gives the mystery more emotional investment than expected. The cast is stacked, which gives the train full of suspects immediate appeal. Michelle Pfeiffer brings elegance and hidden pain, while Judi Dench, Willem Dafoe, Daisy Ridley, Josh Gad, and the rest of the ensemble make even smaller roles feel important. The production design is one of the movie’s biggest strengths. The train, costumes, snowy landscapes, and period detail create an elegant, old-fashioned mystery atmosphere. The solution works because it becomes a moral dilemma about justice and legality, not just a question of guilt. The movie is polished and well acted, even if it feels a little too controlled at times. See more Read all reviews
