Tony F @Batmorph 1d Although the performance by Sean Penn was dramatically oiutstanding the opposite end of the bar, emotionally pictured Kevin Bacon (as the good guy, for a change) as a cool, pragmatic detective, I loved the chemistry between him and Fishburne's character; it kept the plot moving nicely along, a slow brooding piece of brilliant cinema thanks to all involved, including the direction of Clint Eastwood. I immediately noticed his lullaby tune used throughout the movie, which had a similarity to The Unforgiven. We have childhood abuse, broken friendships, grief, marital strife and complicated family dynamics among others. Granted, some elements, such as Kevin Bacon’s trouble with his wife, only pop up now and then, but its resolution is one of the films few hopeful moments. It’s weird that Sean Penn won a best leading actor Oscar, since Bacon is in it far more, and Penn often feels more like a supporting played, but he really gives it his all, often more emotionally affecting when he’s trying to suppress his feelings than when he’s letting them spill out. It takes you on a real emotional roller-coaster with its characters, and when it’s over you start thinking about all the ways their lives could have been different were it not for a single mistake. While Bacon's performance was good, it was Penn and Robbins both punching above their weight that really made the movie. was surprised to discover at the end it was directed by eastwood; in hindsight, it clearly shows his style and touch. The movie explores grief, guilt, fate, and the devastating consequences of choices made in moments of pain. There are no easy heroes or villains, only deeply flawed people trying to live with their past. The deliberately measured pacing may not appeal to everyone, but the writing, direction, and performances make Mystic River an unforgettable character-driven crime drama. Unfortunately for him, he ran into the juggernaut known as ‘The Return of the King’ in 2004 and we all know what happened that year. An outstanding movie featuring memorable Oscar winning performances by Sean Penn and Tim Robbin’s.
