The care Steven Soderbergh takes to encapsulate so much style and storytelling into a film of this genre is commendable. Every character (and especially the audience) knows only what is directly in front of them, constantly guessing which strings are being pulled and by whom. The costume design was inspired. Every camera angle and lens choice felt purposeful and noticeable without becoming distracting. The wide lens gets some hate here but I think the choice sets the unease and swallows the characters in traps of their making.  This film is a true homage to noir as an art form, a medium capable of housing a great story rather than merely decorating one. It’s a film that kept me thinking about every character and what they actually knew while the credits rolled. Even moments that initially felt like inconsistencies gradually revealed themselves as clever choices by the filmmakers. Well done. Might say love hate love hate…music and photography all hang around the core of the film with great power. See more j A @jra527 Jul 7 Man. this is one horrible movie. slow. confusing. trying to be noir. just really bad. annoyingly so. sounds from reading the spoilers it was a good plot but executed so poorly. like walking into a movie half way thru and being expected to know what is going on. this movie puts director ego above enjoyment of movie watching. just tell a good story and let the audience have a something of a clue of what is going on. having lots of characters doesnt make the movie good. only if those characters provide a semblance of what is happening. mystery is only mystery if you can engage the viewer enough to care. i dont care as there are just actors having conversations that mean nothing due the complete lack of context or character development even.
