Hugo S @Hugo_Shudder 1 day ago Set in 1987, Conor lives a solitary existence with his beloved dog and only companion, Sandy. His quiet life is disrupted when Sandy is abducted by a demon from a sinister computer game, sending him on a dangerous quest to rescue his only friend. Filmed entirely in black and white, "Obex" is a nostalgic throwback that blends horror and science fiction, creating a distinctive retro cinematic experience. The movie explores the profound loneliness of a man who takes refuge in the limited digital experiences the world had to offer in the '80s, using surreal and bizarre imagery to deliver a deeply felt message about human connection and isolation. An interesting piece of artsy filmmaking that stands out in a genre often crowded with formulaic stories. See more Peter W @RT12077588 Oct 10, 2026 Overall, OBEX is an enjoyable film filled with fun fantasy and sci-fi elements, and the horror elements were quite unexpected too. Considering this was all directed, co-written, and led by Albert Birney, there is a lot of work that has gone into this film. The results are quite impressive, not to mention enjoyable, with unpredictable outcomes. The visuals are fun and cool, as the black-and-white imagery feels deeply fitting, and the retro technology is used well, with a creativity I could not help but enjoy. The ride this film took me on was engaging, but its biggest drawback is that it is quite slow to get underway, and minor plot details remain somewhat ambiguous. That said, there is no denying it is highly artistic. For those seeking a film where a lead character deals with reality as well as an open-world video game experience, press and screen OBEX today. See more Craig B @Boundsy Sep 18, 2026 Well, there goes 20 minutes of my life. I'm not sure what everyone else watched, but this was utter rubbish with zero entertainment appeal. See more MB C @MB.Cinema Jul 16, 2026 It follows Conor, a lonely man who enters a mysterious game to rescue his dog from a demonic entity. The film presents an intriguing concept, exploring isolation, escapism, and the dangers of living through screens. Visually, it offers creative and nostalgic elements, especially within its strange black-and-white game world. However, the execution feels uneven, with ideas that aren’t fully developed and a somewhat limited emotional impact. Overall, it’s a unique but normal experience—caught between imaginative ambition and incomplete delivery. See more Melissa L @Agent99 Jul 4, 2026 It was different. It garnered '80s nostalgia, and it had a good ending. See more Logan D @Greynomad38 Mar 22, 2026 In 1987, a man buys a video game which leads to a demon being summoned. A surreal, lo-fi fantasy/psychological journey, this film is about character and mood than spectacle or even plot. Although it takes a while to get moving, the second half is impressive considering Birney (who also stars) was working on a small budget. Although not as strong as Strawberry Mansions I did enjoy how it portrays video games as having deep meaning to some in the 80s. See more Read all reviews
