Sam p @laniakea 10h Lynchian Cosplay Without the Vision. OBEX desperately wants to be Eraserhead for the dial-up generation and that desperation is its downfall. The moody black and white, the crawling cicada sounds, the oppressive atmosphere it checks every arthouse box while forgetting to justify any of it. Where Lynch creates genuine unease from some dark corner of his subconscious, OBEX feels calculated. The insect sounds don't burrow under your skin, they announce themselves. The sluggish first hour plays like watching paint dry in slow motion. There's craft here and the period detail is lovingly rendered but technique without vision is just technique. OBEX mistakes slowness for profundity. It doesn't work. Lynchian window dressing with nothing meaningful underneath. This film felt like an ode to David Lynch in some ways, and perhaps a little bit more quirked up. The surrealism, artistic direction, and soundtrack all worked beautifully together.
