In 1944 in Spain, Ofelia and her ailing mother arrive at the post of her mother's new husband, a sadistic army officer who is trying to quell a guerrilla uprising. While exploring an ancient maze, Ofelia encounters the faun Pan, who tells her that she is a legendary lost princess and must complete three dangerous tasks in order to claim immortality.

Compelling story, good sound track and effective interweaving of real and imaginary worlds and characters. Story and visuals both very dark - the dark picture was welcome during several episodes of violence. The adults don't have much backstory, but since we are seeing most of this through the eyes of a child, that is appropriate. It was interesting that, although I don't really speak Spanish, by the end scenes I had stopped noticing the subtitles and was hearing the English in my mind as though it was spoken. Can't remember that ever happening before.
