Critics Consensus

Peggy Sue Got Married may seem just another in a line of '80s boomer nostalgia films, but none of the others have Kathleen Turner keen lead performance.

What if Jesus had thwarted crucifixion? What if Peggy Sue could go back in time and not marry her adulterous husband? The same predicament, really.

This prom-night balloon of a movie floats easily above the year's other exercises in '50s nostalgia. If you dare reach for it, it will land smartly in your heart.

It's grave, lumbering, arrhythmic, and bloated, an emotional hogwallow of catchpenny insights and easy sentimentality.

It's not Coppola's usual territory, and he overplays the Capra card a little, but he has fashioned a thoughtful, rewarding tale - even if he doesn't use a DeLorean car to get there.

Peggy Sue Got Married is a thoughtful and warm comedy that will only get better as you age.

A Back to the Future for adults, this excellent film marks an acting threshold for Turner and a return to form for Coppola.

Although the premise is entertaining and the actors are likable, Peggy Sue Got Married squanders the opportunity to make its story more meaningful. What could have been a genuinely heartwarming reflection on accepting the choices we’ve made or finding the courage to change our destiny, becomes little more than a carousel of ’60s music, costumes, and nostalgia.

Peggy Sue Got Married is one of my favourite films. I picked this movie from a pile of videotapes given to me to choose from when I was 11 years old in hospital about to get major surgery which was a success in the end. I watched it about 20 times easily. Kathleen Turners performance is stellar, her characters emotional scenes especially stand out, the film was shot with such warmth and reality, top notch directing right here and it still has me glued to the screen the many few times I’ve watched since those days and coincidentally takes me back to being 11 every time. I highly recommend to anyone who hasn’t seen this beauty.

I remember this movie as a kid. Nicholas Cage was hilarious in it, even though he didn’t mean it
