Critics Consensus

Despite an interesting premise (and a starmaking turn from Vin Diesel), Pitch Black is too derivative and formulaic to fully recommend to sci-fi or action fans.

Pitch Black falters a bit in its last half-hour-the film's darkest moment reduces Diesel to delivering a pithy one-liner-but for the most part, it's terrific.

David Twohy's film undoubtedly has something interesting about it, and that something can be summarised in two words: Vin Diesel.

A smart, suspenseful sci-fi movie from director Twohy, whose underrated 1996 film, The Arrival, also brought visual imagination and intelligence to the genre.

A small creature feature with a pair of great lead performances from Mitchell and Diesel. The visual effects are dodgy at times, but the concept and Twohy's execution, as well as plus unexpected narrative subversions, make this an underrated classic.

With its first half sporting a brilliant desert surrealism and the second loaded with stylised gore, director David Twohy's futuristic frightener is a vivid, pulse-pounding achievement.

C-

Yet another insecure hissy fit of a movie — a thriller without enough confidence in itself or its characters to calm down for two seconds and let the actors speak to each other like human beings.

I hate the the got a big splat. So, unfortunately, this was actually the first time for this movie for me. I is fantastic. Vin Diesel really made a hero out of himself in this movie. He just seems to be a bad ass every turn he takes in this movie. I don't care if he is technically the bad guy in the film he is most definitely the good for how he composes himself. I am actually excited to watch the next 2 films following this film. And it's to my understanding there could be a 4th soon. It's Riddick: Furya. I believe I will enjoy the following movie drops. Congratulations to a great cast in this movie. Very dramatic acting.

An excellent movie about surviving on a planet that goes totally Dark, thus the name Pitch Black. This was definately one of Vin Diesel best movies of all time!

It was not as interesting as I was hoping it would be, and the story was definitely all over the place, but I still had a lot of fun watching it. This is a great sci-fi-horror adventure, and it is full of action and terror that'll leave anyone hooked. I definitely recommend this for action, sci-fi, adventure, and thriller fans!

I would rather get suspended upside down and have my face connected to a pipe where 3 muscular men r fed beans and defecate in the pipe and I have to endure it for 3 straight months than watch this again. I will say, this is a great comedy movie. The cameraman has the skills of an unripened fetus and constantly stretched the actors faces into convertibles. Oh yeah the actors. Apparently they come from Arnold Schwarzeneggers school of emoting, we can tell. There’s also Vin Diesel, more like Buns Dihsel. The directors r gooners, 2 mins into the movie and the main character makes a questionable sound, they talk abt shoving a cork into a child, and Bun Dihsel grabs a girl into an extremely inappropriate position. I would wish this movie upon my worst enemy.

A somewhat generic monster movie. You know the giant space birds will eat most if them, you just don't know which ones.
