Adam Sandler and Kevin James together can be a hit-or-miss pairing, and while their chemistry still delivers some laughs, there are moments where the overacting becomes a bit much. That said, this is a film that almost requires exaggerated performances, and Sandler’s goofy, over-the-top style fits the absurd premise. The idea of classic pixelated video game characters invading the real world is genuinely creative, and the screenplay deserves credit for originality alone. Unfortunately, the execution struggles. The story often feels flat, and certain plotlines don’t fully connect or build meaningful momentum. Direction plays a role here, as the film never quite elevates its fun concept into something memorable. While it isn’t terrible and can be enjoyable in the moment, Pixels is largely forgettable.
