Critics Consensus

Turning the camera's scrutinizing eye back onto To Catch a Predator's journalistic legacy, Primetime interrogates the slippery boundary between justice and lurid spectacle with crackling style and an outstanding Robert Pattinson.

Primetime’s story is insular, but there is a wealth of ideas; the central concerns here, paedophilia and predation, are handled with an intelligent, confounding sparseness. Go to Full Review

A thriller that finds satire everywhere it looks. And as the show’s real-life circus master Chris Hansen, Robert Pattinson puts in his best performance in a golden year. Go to Full Review

... Primetime is a darkly hilarious satire that somehow never loses sight of all the horrors it’s depicting. Go to Full Review

The show was called "To Catch a Predator," but Oppenheim makes the case that everyone involved, from the alleged pedos getting busted on national television to Hansen to the head of the network, are all predators of one kind or another. Go to Full Review

I can’t tell if Lance Oppenheim is trying to be clever with Chris Hansen, but I am convinced this film is broken, concealing the very conversation the director wanted to have. Go to Full Review

This film is not an analysis of how media functions, fails, or misleads. It’s just another A24 indie-monstrosity, a creep-out designed for a future media-studies curriculum. Go to Full Review

CTBoone57 6 hrs ago Great filmmaking and excellent performances from Robert Pattinson and Skyler Gisondo! See more Steven 20 hrs ago The movie’s a little sporadic, solid film. See more Matthew G 2 days ago Worth the watch See more Terry Jackson 2 days ago Right off the bat, this movie felt like a parody of *To Catch a Predator*. Chris Hansen is depicted as this Dracula-inspired character, and Robert Pattinson did a solid job in the role. However, I don’t think it was an Oscar-worthy performance. The guy handling the chat logs with the predators to me he was getting bricked up by talking to these sick men was definitely a choice. I just wish the filmmakers had reached out to Chris Hansen instead of making a movie that relied so heavily on fantasy and information they seemingly read off Wikipedia. The subplot involving the decoy felt completely unnecessary, especially with him singing “Seasons of Love” throughout the movie. The whole film felt unreal and cringey, and I don’t think A24 was the right studio for it because they were unable to deliver a somewhat coherent story I walked out of the theater because I said to myself “Decoy Dan is gonna sing Seasons of Love while on the phone with the predator that is gonna kill himself huh?” And boy was I right! In my opinion, this is a movie I wish I had waited to rent instead of seeing it in theaters. 🤷🏾‍♂️ See more Jeff 3 days ago very disturbing See more raul 3 days ago Takes a lot of liberties but still an enjoyable movie with what seems two main characters. Hansen shares the spotlight with decoy Dan but still a great watch. See more Read all reviews
