The brutality of Raging Bull is intense, a mood Scorsese maintains consistently. And, connected with that, is the director's search for, if not beauty, then poetry, within that vivid viciousness. He succeeds in that search.

De Niro playing La Motta in Raging Bull is beyond mere typecasting. It is an apotheosis. With La Motta as technical adviser, De Niro, an actor with a passion for authenticity, has found the ideal outlet for his singular talent.

This is a fine film as far as performances and imagery go. But the story is pure nihilism and vice. It's a terrible story with very little to laud. I think it's an amazing perspective on modern man that this film is rated so highly by so many. Terrible film. Would not suggest anyone watch it.

Could the producers have just spent more money on the sound? Feels like the Godfather movies and Rocky got together and had a Raging Bull baby a few years later. All old news.

Is it true that the film earned less than $110K in the box office? It is a masterpiece! DeNiro became Jake LaMotta. Scorsese's direction is sharp and brilliant. Cathy Moriarity was excellent as was Joe Pesci.
