Headstrong Thomas Dunson (John Wayne) starts a thriving Texas cattle ranch with the help of his faithful trail hand, Groot (Walter Brennan), and his protégé, Matt Garth (Montgomery Clift), an orphan Dunson took under his wing when Matt was a boy. In need of money following the Civil War, Dunson and Matt lead a cattle drive to Missouri, where they will get a better price than locally, but the crotchety older man and his willful young partner begin to butt heads on the exhausting journey.

The movie is exceptional but what's most interesting is Wayne's character isn't particularly likable and didn't fit his carefully curated image. One of his best Westerns and at the very least, in the top 20 Westerns of all time.

It is with old-school Western movies like this one that I enjoy the genre. Kevin Costner and Taylor Sheridan are doing what they can to keep the genre going, bless their heart.

Epic, immersive tale of a long and desperate cattle drive. Howard Hawks skillfully uses the story's human drama to explore themes of perseverance, leadership, and family bonds, as isolation and adversity test the men's grit and character. John Wayne's rugged Texas rancher evokes Captain Ahab as he obsessively and tyrannically pursues his goal. Montgomery Clift is effortlessly charismatic as his young protege, while Joanne Dru adds dimension to the story as the tough-talking Hawksian love interest.
