Blue macaws Blu (Jesse Eisenberg), Jewel (Anne Hathaway) and their three children are comfortably settled in the city -- perhaps too comfortably. Jewel fears that the children are becoming more like humans than birds. After learning that she and Blu may not be the last blue macaws after all, Jewel decides that their little family should visit the Amazon jungle. It's there that Blu meets his formidable father-in-law (Andy Garcia) and goes beak-to-beak with arch-nemesis Nigel (Jemaine Clement).

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Like most sequels, Rio 2 takes its predecessor's basic template and tries to make it bigger -- which means it's even busier, more colorful, and ultimately more exhausting for viewers outside the youthful target demographic.

Director Carlos Saldanha's love for his native Rio shines through, but that's not quite enough to save the messy, sprawling story. Go to Full Review Roxana Hadadi Punch Drunk Critics Jan 9, 2017

Leaburn O @RT35452347 6 days ago A solid second outing for these characters but sequel animations are rarely as good as the original. This one isn’t too bad though. Watched on DVD. See more Blake W @RT74328686 May 29, 2026 This was almost better than Rio 1 and I was disappointed that the ending ruins it all. If the time was stretched out an extra 30 minutes to give the villains more screentime/buildup, along with a proper, slower-paced ending instead of everything happening at once, this would 100% be better than the first movie.
