Based on the popular spy series, this film follows suave international thief Simon Templar (Val Kilmer), who is contracted by Russian oil magnate Ivan Tretiak (Rade Serbedzija) to steal a formula for cold fusion. So Templar, nicknamed "The Saint" because of his use of Roman Catholic saints as aliases, finds scientist Dr. Emma Russell (Elisabeth Shue), seduces her and steals the information. However, because the formula was incomplete, Tretiak now wants to kill Templar and kidnap Russell.

Kilmer slips in and out of a series of ludicrously elaborate disguises, some more convincing than others, while poor Shue shuffles through the role of a sexy, book-reading babe pretending to be a dowdy lady scientist in kneesocks.

The magic of 90s filmmaking and Kilmer and Shue’s chemistry are the only forgivable aspects of this incredulous spy thriller. You’ll have to crank up suspending your disbelief to the max, as the story is far-fetched, convoluted, and relies heavily on cheesy tropes.

Fun movie. Definitely dated by its ‘90s cheese and some outdated screenwriting style. Kilmer and Shue save this movie and make it enjoyable. Full stop.

Think we went overboard on whatever cold fusion is. Poor Elisabeth Shue is given almost nothing to work with to develop her character or the romance with Val.

Synopsis
