Tom Hanks is great as always (LOVE his monologue near the end); Emma Thompson is fabulous; Colin Ferrell shows great range; and special mention to Paul Giamatti who is sweet and endearing. She gives a sharp, funny, wounded performance that is by far the best reason to watch. The high production value helped, with fine period detail and a polished look, but the sentimentality lowered my rating. The understory, gradually revealing the early life of P.L. Travers, the author of Mary Poppins, and depicting how the people in her dysfunctional family led her to write Mary Poppins, is the true core of this movie. I will never see Mary Poppins in quite the same way. All of the acting is superior, and the score is excellent. This is not the shallow, childlike movie that many will expect. Otherwise, I highly recommend this movie, even if you are not a big fan of the original Mary Poppins film. I had no idea about the backstory of the creation of Mary Poppins for the Disney film, and how a sad and difficult past is behind the story of one of Disney's most beloved characters. You definitely should watch this film. Very good. Travers. It also delves into the author's childhood as we see her relationship with her father, a depressive who can't stop drinking.
